Dear Therapist, Was I Ghosted? A Relationship Scenario

The Letter

I met someone online a few months ago, and the relationship became intense quickly. We talked every day, spent most weekends together, and agreed we weren’t interested in dating other people. He often spoke about future plans and recently told me he could see us becoming serious.

After meeting some of my friends, he became distant. He canceled our next date, stopped answering my messages, and removed me from social media without explanation. I keep replaying our time together, wondering whether I missed a warning sign.

How can someone act so committed and then disappear? Should I reach out one last time, or accept that his silence is the answer?

My Response

It makes sense that you feel confused. After all, you had a great time together, got to be close, and then he disappeared without warning or explanation. In moments like this, we often deal with confusion by replaying everything and becoming hypervigilant about what went wrong.

Confusion creates a desire for certainty and clarity. Yet what makes it so difficult is that some questions can only be answered if the other person is willing to provide an explanation.

Without his clarification, you may continue searching for an answer that never feels good enough.

Yet, you can try to make a good guess, which often I find quite useful. This is not mind-reading, but making an educated guess about what may be happening for him. What do you think his silence means? What is the difficult possibility that has not been explored?

Trying to understand what he may have been experiencing can feel liberating, even when it requires you to entertain a difficult thought or perspective. When we can approach uncomfortable possibilities with curiosity and steadiness, we often develop greater wisdom about ourselves, other people, and our relationships.

Perhaps he lost interest but found it difficult to tell you, especially after the good time you shared.

He may not have wanted to see you disappointed or hurt, or perhaps he simply did not consider how his silence would affect you. That does not make his behavior acceptable, but it may help explain it.

I cannot know for certain what happened. My observation is that he was unable or unwilling to tolerate the discomfort of an honest conversation, and his silence tells you something important about him.
